Inlays & Onlays
Dental Inlays and Onlays are dental restorations that are used to repair our back molars when they are significantly damaged by decay or fractures, but not damaged to the extent to need a full dental crown. Considered as partial crowns, inlays and onlays are easier, quicker and require no carving or shaping of the tooth’s healthy structure. The difference between an inlay and an onlay is that the inlay is used to cover an affected area that is within the cusps of the tooth, while an onlay is designed and fitted to cover the area within the cusps, but wraps over the cusps, as well, covering more of the tooth’s structure and surface.
The Process for Dental Inlays & Onlays
Just like in all the other restorative procedures, the decayed part of the tooth is cleared completely, removing all the diseased tissue. After that, an impression is taken, so that the restoration can be designed to perfectly fit the affected tooth. When the dental restoration comes back from the lab, it is placed onto the tooth to ensure a perfect fit. If our experienced and highly skilled dentists are happy with the fit of the restoration, it gets permanently attached and bonded to the tooth.
